J&R Foods Grocery Store

J&R Foods was the Alabama grocery store where Lucille worked as manager, Jazmine Landry worked in produce, and Elliot Landry worked part time as a teenager.

Staff and the Landry Family

Lucille knew Jazmine and Elliot through their work at J&R Foods. Elliot worked after school and on weekends stocking shelves, moving shipping carts, and helping wherever the crew needed him. Lucille taught him inventory organization and efficient stacking. The bakery and deli also became part of Lucille’s practical care for the family: she sometimes made sure Elliot had food during late shifts and gave him an extra bakery cookie after praising his work.

During the January 15, 2019 emergency involving Elliot’s broken wrist, the store was contacted so that Jazmine could be reached. Lucille enabled Jazmine to leave work immediately after learning that Elliot was injured.

Lucille also supported the family outside the emergency. When Jazmine worried that Elliot’s bed was worsening his pain, Lucille referred her to a furniture-assistance nonprofit. After the family obtained a larger bed, Lucille and the store crew pooled money for a queen-size sheet set, pillows, and a king-size comforter.

Lucille and Jazmine remained in contact decades later during Elliot’s final cancer treatment. Lucille continued to remember Elliot’s teenage work at J&R Foods and remained protective when his biological father, Vernon, contacted Jazmine after learning that Elliot was ill.
